Today with 300,00 of my sisters, I celebrate the day my beloved sorority was founded. On January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (aka1908.com) was born. This organization was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. and since that day many women have become a part of this illustrious sisterhood.

I cherish the bonds we have formed through the years as we served together. Working side by side on community programs and raising scholarship funds has brought me great joy. I’ve met so many wonderful women along the way as I’ve attended Sisterly Relations events, Founder’s Day Celebrations, and National Conferences.

When I meet a sister, there is a familiarity in our experiences when Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. unites us. We share a commitment to lifelong service and making a difference in the communities to which we belong. We are not strangers; we are family members that we didn’t know we had.

My sorority is not the only opportunity to bond with other women around common principles. Other sororities and organizations offer the chance to unite individuals around being change agents for worthwhile causes and thank God for it! We all benefit when we serve others.

This is also a principle of the Christian faith. Christ instructs us to show love and notes that it is evidence that we belong to Him. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:35 NIV

This commandment serves those who show love and those who are the recipient of that love. We experience a reciprocal benefit by showing love towards one another. When we show love, we receive that same love back to us. It’s the gift of giving.

It’s what we were created to do. A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity. Proverbs 17:17 NIV When this journey presents a chance to support another sister or brother along the way, we are fulfilling our purpose. While it may be intimidating, we can gain strength, show love, and make a new friend.

I’m thankful for all the friends I’ve made along this journey and I welcome you to take the opportunity to share with others. You can find hope in the comforting words of others. You can also find a safe place to rest while you travel this road. You can meet family members you didn’t know you had.

I’ve heard it said that infertility is the sorority you never wanted to be a part of and one that you can’t wait to get out of. I can relate to the angst in the midst of that statement. However, my sorority experience suggests that even among these thorns there are beautiful roses; a pink tea rose!

HOPE-Filled Thought: I am not ALONE!

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for your love and that you have never left me alone. Unite me with others who love you and have the desire to uplift and support others. I trust that you have a place for me to serve and to be served on this journey. I receive it with joy and it is so. Amen.
