Napoleon Hill is an American self-help author whose books instruct readers that raising expectations is essential to improving one’s life. He is best known for his book, Think and Grow Rich(1937) and it’s considered one of the 10 top selling self-help books of all time.
I recently found the following quote, “Your big opportunity may be right where you are now”, and it brings to light a simple truth. That big opportunity I’ve been looking and waiting for might just be right under my nose.
It’s so easy to imagine what the perfect opportunity looks like in the future. We think when this or that particular thing happens, we’ll be ready to seize the day and take advantage of the perfect opportunity.
Sometimes we even reflect on days gone by as we figure that that must have been the ideal opportunity and now its over. We wrestle with regret that can paralyze us as we mourn the missed opportunities.
Both of these views rob us of the beauty of today and the advantage it presents. If we see today as either a place of regret of yesterday or as a dress rehearsal for tomorrow, we can miss out.
I believe Napoleon Hill knew that everyday is a new day that is filled to the brim with opportunity. Waking up each day can be exciting when you see it as a chance to meet the fortune that is already waiting on you.
It means that our stories are not over and we can still write a brand new page or two. It means that the best is really yet to come. It means that we can look for ways to move forward toward our family goals right now!
Is everything suddenly perfect? No! Do we have all the money or insurance we need right now? Nope! Can we rewind our biological clocks, undo our actions, or recover our options? Not a chance!
These realities can only rob us of the gift of today if we allow them to and that is empowering. This perspective challenges us to see everyday as a chance to get it right and take action as we move forward in the direction of our greatest dreams. It’s not always easy to choose to see the glass half full but I’m willing to give it a try.
